SPORTS, FRIENDS & FUN FOR ALL, an integrated social club was developed in 1987 in conjunction with the Smithtown High School. It is commonly known on West campus just as SFFA. This grass-roots program was a response to parents and teachers who lamented that many children and adults with disabilities had a gaping void in their lives that could only be filled by having friendships. Parents have been acutely feeling what researchers in the field have been saying for years; people with disabilities face numerous barriers to forming friendships of their own. Many of the students lack the social skills to initiate and facilitate friendships, they also have limited opportunities to meet friends, and, of course, they carry the stigma of being different in the eyes of a society that can sometimes value the superficial. The Leadership class and SFFA hold large dances several times a year which are very popular and well attended. Additionally the club focuses on smaller group activities, developing more one-on- one long-lasting friendships. The small groups have hiked, played board games, gone to the movies, and gathered at the local bowling alley. Friendships are encouraged by talking about common interests and staying in touch by email. Parent feedback over the years has prompted the group to continue to offer activities all through the summer.
SFFA provides opportunities where everyone benefits. The H.S. students get an opportunity to get to know someone with disabilities who may seem different but actually has a lot to offer and teach them. Many of the high school students have been so moved by their experience in the club that they have made decisions to enter careers in special education. The club is supported by Fundraising activities by SHS west students in Mr. Dematteo’s Leadership class.
