Literacy Nassau’s Next Chapter Book Clubs
NEW CLUB LOCATION: East Meadow Library
What is Literacy Nassau’s Next Chapter Book Club? It is an opportunity for adults (18 and older) with intellectual and developmental disabilities to gather together in a relaxed, community setting to form lasting friendships through reading aloud and talking about books.
How does it work? Book club members meet weekly for one hour at local bookstores, libraries, coffee shops, and cafés to read aloud and discuss books. Our clubs meet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Who can participate? Anyone can participate, regardless of their reading level. Literacy Nassau’s Next Chapter Book Club members range from those who read well, to those who cannot read independently. There are usually 5-8 members in each group.
Who leads the book clubs? Literacy Nassau trains two volunteers to co-facilitate each book club. The volunteers assist those who may struggle with reading while encouraging members to interact with each other, and with the community around them.
Where do the clubs meet? We have over 30 clubs across Long Island. These community-based clubs meet for one hour each week. We currently have openings in the East Meadow Library on Mondays at 7:00 pm.
